About Debt Hater
Welcome to Debt Hater’s blog!
I am Debt Hater, a 30-something, professional woman living in Washington, D.C.
I hate debt! Not just financial debt, but debt in all areas of life — physically, emotionally, spiritually and any other -allys you can think of. To me, debt freedom isn’t just about money, but about being a socially-conscious consumer and enthusiastic community contributor and being physically and emotionally fit.
My journey to debt freedom began when I discovered just how deep in credit card debt I was — I owed nearly $16,000 to credit cards by the time I got out of graduate school. I started this blog to chronicle my journey, to keep myself honest and to see the help of other people out there smarter than me about personal finance. What I got was a dedicated following of people who were just like me — smart and responsible, but just not into personal finance. My readers kept me accountable, offered support and sought advice and inspiration from me, which I was happy to give.
I also realized that wrestling with my financial debt opened my eyes to different kinds of debt I was dealing with — I wasn’t exercising; I made poor food choices; I was isolating myself out of embarrassment of my fiscal situation; and I was letting stress get to me. The time I spent working through financial debt took me from shocked, to sick, to despondent, to depressed, to determined, back to depressed, then back to fiercely determined to free myself from my credit cards and everything else I was letting hold me back.
Four years after starting the blog I am completely out of financial debt — no credit cards, no school loans, no car payment. Zilch!
Now I write about my ongoing journey with personal finance and living debt free in all aspects of my life.
Welcome!
