Debt Hating 101: How to Spend Your Money Where Your Heart Is

by DH on September 17, 2010

“…For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21

My third guest post is up at NeoSoulAlterEgo’s blog and it’s about setting your financial priorities to create a budget and a financial plan that you’ll actually want to live with. In today’s post, I talk about finding and writing down your financial mission statement — a little something that will help you whenever you are faced with tough personal finance choices.

When I was paying off my credit card debt, I wrote many posts about how frustrating it was to never have any money left to do the things I wanted to do or that interested me. Not having that made it hard to continue on the journey to debt freedom, but even worse, it often led to me doing stupid things out of frustration (like using my credit cards at all, a no no when you’re in debt).

Once I put big dents into my debt, I found wiggle room to spend guilt-free on thing I enjoyed. I enjoy experience.

My financial mission statement: I want to be debt-free and build wealth so that I can live a life full of worthwhile experiences and know that I helped others do the same.

I still say that when you’re in debt, your number one priority is to get out! So that may mean that you don’t get to do anything fun for a while. You had your fun when you ran up debt, now it’s time to pay up.

What’s your mission statement? Check out the post and share with NeoSoulAlterEgo.
